Make a cheese fondue without a fondue pot

What about a mouthwatering pot of warm melted cheese, served with crusty bread, vegetables or even grilled sausages? Fondue is making its way back into many kitchens – here’s our version of this retro dish.

If the cheese fondue cools too much, simply return it to the stove and reheat over a low heat.

Smoky spicy sausages are a treat with this creamy cheese fondue.

Simply fry the sausages in a little oil over a medium heat until cooked through. Cut into large chunks and serve.

Method

  1. Rub the inside of a heavy-based saucepan with 1 clove garlic, halved lengthways. Discard the garlic.

    Step 1

  2. Place 2 cups milk, 1 T Worcester sauce, 2 T ground mustard and 3 T cake flour in the saucepan over a low heat.

    Step 2

  3. Heat until gently simmering, then gradually stir in 3 cups grated Cheddar and 3 cups of any other grated cheese, such as mature Gouda, Gruyère or Emmenthal.

    Step 3

  4. Stir slowly until all the cheese has melted, pour into a serving dish and serve immediately.
