September was all about easy meals and recipes that are proudly South African. Whether TASTE readers were looking for something quick and simple or wanted to go all out for Heritage Month, these are the recipes they couldn’t stop making in September.

10. Braised lamb shoulder with sundried tomatoes

Just as we got excited about spring, the weather took a turn. While you paused the salads, this braised lamb shoulder was the hearty recipe you needed in the cold weather. The best thing about this recipe is that it's a prep-it-and-forget-it recipe. Once the lamb shoulder is seared, just pop it in the over with sundried tomatoes, garlic cloves, herbs and stock. It's ready in 4 hours and you'll be guaranteed fall-off-the-bone goodness.

Cook once, and eat thrice. This genius recipe is an excellent way to meal prep without eating the same thing every day. Cook a big batch of curried mince and serve it over pasta, in sandwiches, as a casserole or over rice – the options are endless.

8. Classic cremora tart

This recipe falls firmly in the “don’t-knock-it-till-you’ve-tried-it” category – it may sound a bit odd but it’s a South African classic for a reason: it’s truly delicious. (And easy!).

To make the filling, place the Cremora and milk in a large bowl and whisk until combined. Add the condensed milk and mix until combined. Gradually add the lemon juice, stirring between additions. The mixture will slowly start to thicken. 4. Pour the mixture over the base, cover with clingwrap and chill for at least 6 hours or overnight if possible. 5. 7. Peppermint Crisp tart

You can't mention South African desserts without including Peppermint Crisp tart. Layered with rich cream, caramel, crushed Peppermint Crisp chocolate bars and crushed biscuit, this no-bake fridge tart is a failsafe recipe that’s easy to assemble. Its refreshing minty flavour somehow cuts through the caramel and chocolate and makes it the perfect treat for warm days, leaving everyone craving seconds.

6. No-bake cheesecake 

If you prefer light and airy cheesecakes, this no-baked version is the way to go. You can make it a day ahead and let it set in the fridge, ready to be served when it's time for dessert. This recipe is garnished with berries, but feel free to use any fruit that's in season.

5. Porcini girasolini with crispy Parma ham

2. Salmon and sundried tomato pasta

1. Deep-fried egg with rice

If you've never deep-fried an egg, this is your sign to change that! Wayne Chang from @munchin_mash shares his favourite way to cook an egg. Deep-fried for a minute or two, the egg gets crispy on the outside, while the yolk stays lovely and runny. These deep-fried eggs are best served over rice with lots of chilli crisp.
