Best-ever sides to serve with soup

Because sometimes soup is just an excuse to eat the sides, these are our favourite things to serve with soup.

Oven-toasted ham and cheese sandwiches

Soup and toasted sandwiches go together like salt and pepper. This quick and easy version doesn’t require you to stand over a pan frying them. Swap out the Comte for any cheese you have lying around, and use any ham you like. Whatever combo you go for will be perfect for dipping into hot soup.

Crispy baby marrow fries

Sneak more vegetables on to the table with these crispy baby marrow fries, they’re not only very simple and delicious, but they’re the perfect vehicle for dunking into soup.

Sea-salt sticks

If you like the idea of fresh homemade bread but can’t spare the time, these sticks are ready in about the same time it would take to get dinner on the table.

Phyllo cheese strips

Trust us when we say you won’t be able to resist these! Crispy phyllo gives way to a creamy feta-heavy centre that makes the effort well worth it. If you can’t find mascarpone, cream cheese will work just as well (or leave it out entirely and increase the amount of feta – no one will be mad).

Lentil fritters

These crowdpleasers are good enough on their own as a snack, but they also make a tasty side dish to soup. They’re also a great way to use leftover cooked lentils – you could even use brown lentils if that’s all you have.

Roast cauliflower with peri peri

If you’re serving a cauliflower soup, bits of roasted cauliflower on top will add a delicious new texture and this spicy version is one of our favourites. This combo would also work on tomato soup or even butternut.

Sweet potato with lemony crème fraîche

These double up as dippers, and a soup garnish. If you’re making any kind of root veg soup (such as butternut, carrot, sweet potato or parsnip) this is the perfect pairing.

Crunchy chickpeas

Ignore the butternut! We’re including the below recipe for the crispy chickpeas, which just happen to make a more-ish soup topper.
