This dish may be humble in its ingredients, but it bursts with character. Although each family has their own twist, this recipe captures the essence of the comforting traditional South African staple. You can whip up this crowd-pleaser in under 15 minutes using simple ingredients you’re likely to have on hand.

  • 2 T olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 t medium curry powder
  • 1 t ground turmeric
  • ½ cabbage, finely sliced
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 2 t black pepper

Cooking Instructions

1 Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook until slightly softened, about 5 minutes.

2 Stir in the curry powder and turmeric and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the cabbage and coat in the onion mixture.

3 Add the lemon juice and 2 T water and cook until the cabbage is al dente and slightly charred.

4 Serve with a generous grinding of black pepper and a pinch of salt with lamb or pork chops, or as a standalone dish.
