There’s a new gin in town, and it is a beaut. Whitley Neill Gin recently launched their award-winning Blackberry gin on local shores, and not a moment too soon. This vibrant spirit is inspired by English hedgerows laden with fresh blackberries in late summer, and pays homage to the childhood memories of Whitley Neill Gin founder Johnny Neill.

Whitley Neill Gin is made right here in South Africa and is crafted from a range of carefully selected botanicals before being distilled in a traditional copper pot still, using only the purest water. Aside from the botanicals normally associated with gin – juniper, coriander, lemon and orange peel, angelica root, cassia and orris root – it also features a mix of innovative botanicals like Cape gooseberries and baobab fruit to its line-up.

The new-to-us Blackberry gin tastes of fresh, plump berries, and charms with notes of floral hedgerow. It has a distinctive smooth flavour, with a core of juniper followed by sweet citrus and hints of black pepper. Small surprise that it won silver at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Blackberry gin is ideal for all your summery G&T needs and pairs well with any premium Indian tonic as well as lemonade and dry lemon. Be sure to try it also with either Hall & Bramley purple or blue tonic, and garnish with fresh blackberries and a slice of lemon. And if you really want to go to town, why not try a sophisticated “Berry Royale”? Combine 20 ml of this gin with 10 ml lemon juice and 5 ml hibiscus cordial. Top with 100 ml prosecco and call it a party.
