Waffle jaffles on the braai

By Abigail Donnelly, 15 September 2015

Next time you’re braaiing, do yourself a favour and make some waffles in a jaffle iron on the braai. Here’s the recipe, courtesy of Abi.

Over the weekend I was at a book launch and we were chatting about braais and how I really love a plain, creamy potato salad made with plenty of shop-bought mayo, chopped boiled egg, onions, gherkins and parsley. We also got onto the subject of braaied desserts, which are really not my forte.

Another foodie said she loves making waffles on the braai in a jaffle iron using a waffle batter. We love waffles so on Sunday we made waffles in our jaffle iron on the braai and they were a revelation! Thanks Caro!

Sometimes convenience is the way to go, so I used a box of Woolies pancake mix. I added the egg and oil but slightly reduced the amount of milk to create a thicker mixture. Spoon the batter into a well-greased jaffle iron, close and cook over medium coals for a few minutes on both sides. Have a peek to check if it’s done – it should be golden brown and delicious looking. Eat with maple syrup and braaied bananas – we braaied them whole in their skins.

The next time we make them I’m going to toss the hot waffles in cinnamon sugar, then dip them into melted chocolate and make douwaffs – the new doughnut cross waffle.
