As the year winds down we’re all looking forward to a well-deserved break from the school morning scramble. But come January, we’ll probably be only too willing to drop our kids off for a few hours of educational safekeeping.

Trends in South African schools show more and more how technology is being integrated into teaching, with schools using iPads from as early as grade 4. Online tools are making the world of difference in aiding teachers and learners, particularly when it comes to maths. In this year’s International Maths Olympiad, South Africa ranked 58th out of 109 competing countries, with a Cape Town pupil from Westerford High School taking home a bronze medal. E-learning is giving many learners access to after-hours support, be it revision, coaching, or added enrichment. While all of this is positive, it’s also costly.

To celebrate Woolworths’s 85th birthday we’re giving away R1 million in bursaries and school fees. Not just for school kids, these bursaries can be used for university and educational courses too. There are 50 R20 000 bursaries up for grabs. To enter, simply swipe your MySchool or linked Woolies Card between 28 October 2016 and 31 January 2017 when you shop at Woolworths. You get one entry for every Woolies item you purchase, and two entries when you buy kidswear, school wear or school shoes. Whether you win a bursary or not, ultimately we all win, because each card swipe helps kids get the education they deserve and creates a brighter future for South Africa.

Our R1 million bursary competition is open to MySchool Card holders as well as Woolies Card holders who have linked their cards to MySchool. If you haven’t yet linked your cards then visit our website to find out how to do it. Through the MySchool Programme with the help of our customers, Woolworths has already successfully raised R87 million for education, and we’re well on track to meeting our R100 million year-end goal. The MySchool fundraising programme lets you raise funds for a school or charity of your choice without costing you a cent. If you’re not yet a MySchool supporter, sign up to get your free card today and whenever you swipe it at Woolies we’ll give up to 1% of the amount you spend to the school of your choice. So get swiping, and together let’s keep nurturing futures.
