With summer on the way, we’re dreaming of chilled desserts to enjoy on sweltering days … Intrigued? Herewith 5 of our favourite chilled desserts.

Full disclosure: we have a weakness for desserts that can be set in the fridge for a couple of hours (or even overnight). A cold dessert is the perfect sweet choice for summer, and it’s ideal for entertaining since you can make it ahead (even the night before) and get on with other stuff. Favourites include a good old fridge tart, panna cotta and chocolate mousse …

And with the fabulous new LG InstaView door-in-door fridge, you can even keep an eye on your creation as it sets! Simply knock twice on the glass panel and wait to see what’s going on inside, without having to open the door and letting precious cold air escape.

With this nifty fridge in mind, here are 5 of our favourite chilled desserts:

1. 6-ingredient chocolate mousse

April's top 10 recipes

How amazing does this chocolate mousse look? And the best part is that, as chilled desserts go, it only needs a little while to set – 1 to 2 hours. That means you could be whipping it up by 6 and feasting on it by 8… #justsaying

2. Vanilla-and-strawberry layered panna cotta

Instead of the usual individual panna cottas in bowls, we present this elegant, showstopping option: a layered panna cotta-and-strawberry jelly loaf, which is sure to have jaws dropping when you bring it out from the fridge.

3. Mocha crème caramel

A round-up of chilled desserts wouldn’t be complete without an old favourite: crème caramel. This custard-based pudding is making a comeback (along with plenty of other desserts from the 80s) and we couldn’t be happier. This particular version boasts a kicky twist in the form of a chocolate-mocha syrup. We’re very okay with that.

4. Peppermint Crisp trifle

We couldn’t choose between a trifle or a Peppermint Crisp tart and then we realised we don’t have to! This springbokkie Peppermint Crisp trifle is an absolute marvel; we suggest you try it as soon as possible.

5. Classic Cremora tart

Classic Cremora tart

This recipe falls firmly in the “don’t-knock-it-till-you’ve-tried-it” category – it may sound a bit odd but it’s a South African classic for a reason: it’s truly delicious. (And easy!)
