A wilderness paradise with fabulous food: Mhondoro Safari Lodge

By Yvette Samaai, 22 November 2024

Mhondoro Safari Lodge is a gem that shines brightly, offering an unparalleled African safari experience, as well as superb cuisine developed by executive chef Luke Dale Roberts. TASTE’s Yvette Samaai explains why her memories of Mhondoro’s exceptional hospitality, exquisite food, and thrilling wildlife encounters still linger vividly

From the moment we arrived at Mhondoro Safari Lodge, situated in the breathtaking Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo’s Waterberg, the hospitality team rolled out the red carpet, making us feel like royalty. The lodge's elegant design and decor, inspired by the natural surroundings, set the tone for a luxurious and immersive experience.

The cuisine at Mhondoro Safari Lodge was a real highlight of our stay. Executive chef Luke Dale Roberts and his team have crafted menus that celebrate the rich flavours of Africa, blending traditional dishes with modern twists. Each meal was a masterful fusion of local ingredients, expertly prepared and presented with flair.

Standout culinary experiences

• Bush breakfasts: think sweet pancakes and flaky croissants (freshly baked on site) paired with rich, velvety coffee, all enjoyed under the shade of a majestic acacia tree. Not to mention the “ranger’s coffee” – a special brew that incorporates a shot of Amarula. Delicious!

• Sunset cocktails: refreshing sundowners every evening featured beautiful bubbly, paired with delectable canapés such as spicy meatballs, delicious South African cheeses and biltong as the African sky transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours.

• African-inspired feasts: delectable evening meals included a dinner hosted by chef Luke Dale Roberts himself with a specially curated food-and-wine pairing menu, which showcased Mhondoro dishes such as tender, slow-cooked boerewors, infused with the warmth of African spices, served with creamy pap. A decadent malva pudding, rich with caramelised sugar and the subtle tang of apricot jam, was another highlight.

Don’t forget the wildlife

Game drives with expert guides revealed the incredible biodiversity of Welgevonden Game Reserve. We were treated to thrilling encounters with the Big Five – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo – as well as other fascinating creatures.

And there’s more…

Beyond the game drives, Mhondoro Safari Lodge offers a range of activities tailored to your interests. From guided walking safaris to stargazing sessions, each experience is carefully curated to ensure a deeper connection with the natural world.

The lodge's dedication to personalised service, exquisite cuisine, and immersive wildlife encounters has left an indelible mark on my heart.
