Our top 3 tips for entertaining on the fly
Impress the in-laws with these handy summertime hacks when they unexpectedly pop around for a visit.
Stay cool
Heard of frosé? It’s only one of the biggest cocktail trends of the moment, no big deal. Think rosé slushie, and you’re pretty much up to speed. To make your own, pour a bottle of rosé into a freezerproof container and freeze until almost solid. Place in a blender with 100 ml strawberry-and-mint syrup and blend until slushy. Voilà: happy guests, happy host.
Keep those energy levels up
Including those of the unexpected guests who keep popping by more frequently as the holidays draw near – and try not to expend too much energy while you’re scrambling for something to snack on. Always have some stand-bys you can pop onto a platter in minutes: crunchy baby veg with a readymade dip; precooked pork chipolatas with some mustard and pickles; marinated artichokes and falafel with hummus and a couple of pitas cut into triangles. Anything that’ll prevent your informal get-together from evolving into an episode of the hangry games.
Learn how to build a proper fire
Because when the evening’s balmy and the drinks have been flowing, everyone – including yourself – will feel like braaiing. And make sure to keep the freezer stocked with enough boerie and chops to go onto the fire when it’s ready. While you’re waiting, there’s always chips and dip to keep the punters happy.
