5 Dry January drinks for easy summer hosting

By Lesego Madisa, 5 January 2026

Dry January doesn’t mean opting out of summer gatherings. With summer still in full swing, these alcohol-free drinks will rise to any occasion.

With summer still in full swing, January is a month of warm evenings, outdoor lunches and casual get-togethers – even as we return to our routines. Taking a break from alcohol doesn't have to mean stepping away from hosting or socialising; it can be as simple as rethinking what's in your glass. Rather than focusing on substitutes, Dry January invites a new approach: alcohol-free sparkling options that feel considered and are genuinely enjoyable. Here's what we'll have in our glasses this month (and beyond).

1. Cherry cordial

A good cordial gives you flexibility behind the bar – even when there’s no alcohol involved. This cherry cordial is easy to batch, making it ideal for experimenting with other fruits such as berries or stone fruits. This is also a great way to preserve seasonal fruit. Keep a bottle in the fridge and you'll always be prepared for guests.

2. Tea-based “dark and stormy”

Tea is trending in the mixology world for its ability to bring tannins, warmth and complexity to alcohol-free drinks. This tea-based “dark and stormy” combines fragrant Earl Grey with lime, ginger ale and fresh mint for a drink that’s layered, aromatic and refreshing. You can also experiment with other teas: rooibos for smoothness or chai for a spiced twist.

3. Naartjie, espresso and rosemary shrub

A shrub is traditionally made with a concentrated syrup of fruit, sugar and vinegar diluted with soda water. In this version, rosemary-infused honey and fresh naartjie juice are layered with espresso for a bold but balanced combination. If naartjies aren’t in season, ClemenGold mandarins are a great alternative and available at Woolworths nearly year-round.

4. Fruity soda floats

Soda floats get a grown-up update in this version. Experiment with different sorbets and ice creams to create playful, celebratory drinks that aren't overly sweet. Perfect for hot summer afternoons, they bring colour, texture and a touch of nostalgia to your table.

5. Litchi-and-rose faux fizz

If you’re on the hunt for a brunch-approved alcohol-free drink, this faux fizz is it! Subtle floral notes and a soft pink hue make it as Instagram-worthy as it is refreshing. Alcohol-free wine and sparkling wine options are on the rise, offering the flavour, fizz and elegance of traditional sparkling wine without the high ABV, making them ideal for alcohol-free hosting and celebratory toasts.
