Have you spotted pots of strained yoghurt in Woolworths and wondered what makes it special? Thick, creamy and velvety, this style of yoghurt is perfect on its own, with fruit, or even as a savoury accompaniment in Mediterranean‑style dishes.

1. What is strained yoghurt?

Strained yoghurt is made by removing the whey from Greek yoghurt, resulting in a thicker, creamier texture. This style of yoghurt can be enjoyed plain, with sweet toppings, or used in savoury recipes such as dips or sauces or alongside grilled vegetables – similar to Mediterranean or Levantine dishes. It is, however, distinct from labneh, which is tangier and saltier.

2. How it’s made

Woolworths' strained yoghurt is made using just a few simple ingredients: milk, cultures and added protein. The yoghurt is traditionally strained through cloth or hanging bags, naturally thickening it without stabilisers or preservatives. It also includes live bifidobacterium cultures, making it gut‑friendly.

3. Flavours available at Woolworths

Woolworths offers a range of flavoured options that make it easy to enjoy strained yoghurt straight from the fridge. They include blueberry, wild honey blossom and black cherry, which add sweetness to the tangy flavour and creamy texture of the strained yoghurt.

4. How to enjoy strained yoghurt

Strained yoghurt is incredibly versatile. Enjoy it in breakfast bowls, stirred into smoothies, in savoury dishes such as dips and sauces, or baked into desserts. One delicious way to enjoy it is baked yoghurt, gently set in the oven and topped with honeycomb and grilled pineapple. The creamy base pairs beautifully with sweet, crunchy toppings. You can also experiment with your own favourites such as fresh berries, toasted nuts, or a drizzle of syrup.
