What is a tethered bottle cap and why is it important?
Find out why Woolworths is updating its existing 100% fresh juice plastic bottles to include tethered bottle caps.
A what bottle cap, you ask? A tethered – a.k.a. attached – bottle cap. Woolies is updating its existing 100% fresh juice plastic bottles to include tethered bottle caps – an initiative that's already popular in countries such as Italy.
A tethered bottle cap is literally as you would picture it: when you twist the lid off your fresh juice, the cap remains attached to the bottle by a small strip of plastic.
Why is it attached?
It might sound like a weird flex, but this small fix has so many benefits, both for you and the environment. For you, it means that you won't lose your bottle cap anymore. How annoying is it to have to search the floor of your car to dig out a bottle cap from some obscure hiding place?
It's equally important that we don't misplace bottle caps for the environment. We may recycle plastic bottles but once that lid is lost, we forget about it. Just think about how many bottle caps are landing up in the ocean or in a landfill. Alarming, right? Now, with the cap attached to the bottle, you can recycle both bottle and cap in one easy move.

Wait – how do I drink with a cap attached to my bottle?
Yes, this is good for your health and the environment, but let's be practical. We've all been in a situation where a cap hasn't fully twisted off the bottle, making it difficult to take a sip without the cap knocking you in the face. Luckily, the Europeans have already figured it out and there's a nifty hack to avoid this problem! Check it out below.
