10 most popular recipes in August 2024

By TASTE, 2 September 2024

Pasta and chocolate and soups, oh my! We’ve rounded up the top 10 recipes for August 2024, which was filled with all the comfort food greatest hits.

10. Choc chip-and-caramel ice-cream sandwiches

If you're on a quest to find the perfect chocolate-chip cookie, Motheba Makhetha's recipe is it! She made it her mission to make the best-ever chocolate-chip cookies, and we think she succeeded. If that's not enough, she used them to make these epic choc chip-and-caramel ice-cream sandwiches! She stuffed them with caramel, filled them with chocolate ice cream, and rolled them in crushed chocolate Fantastical eggs. Whether you've made the cookies from scratch or used this as inspo for your next ice-cream sandwich, we're not surprised this recipe made it into the top 10.

9. Classic fettuccine Alfredo

This winter, we posted a pasta series by the incomparable Abigail Donnelly. A few pastas made this list, starting with this classic. There was debate on social media about whether Alfredo should include cream or not, but regardless of where you stand, there's no question that this recipe is delicious. It's needs only six ingredients and takes just 20 minutes to make from start to finish.

8. Marrow-and-red pepper pasta

This pasta by Abi is a special one – it's a completely improvised dish made using leftover ingredients from a TASTE shoot. Not only is it an inspired recipe, but it also gave our audience a peek into the inner workings of a set day when we create our content. We hope it also inspired you to get creative and make your own combinations with ingredients that you have in your kitchen.

7. Herman Lensing’s mom’s carrot cake

We've said this a million times, and we'll keep saying it because it's true. Family recipes are the best recipes! This family recipe comes courtesy of Herman Lensing's mom. It's one of the easiest carrot cakes you'll ever make. Herman makes it even easier by making it a sheet cake, but you can make it as a loaf or round cake – whichever you prefer. Lots of people made this and reported back on our social channels saying how good it is. Shout out to @gourmetgoddess_cpt who shared a video of her version, which looks amazing!

6. Dhal soup with chickpea flour dumplings

Abi did another series based around soup in August, and it could not have come at a better time. It was a particularly chilly month, and quick-and-easy soups were definitely on the menu. This soup is ready in under an hour from start to finish and needs just 35 minutes of cooking time. It's made even more substantial (and delicious) with chickpea flour dumplings.

5. Beef-and-lentil soup with easy focaccia

This is another easy soup from Abi's series and it shows you how you can upgrade convenience foods. Rather than make soup from scratch, Abi used Woolworths' canned beef-and-lentil soup, but she made it more exciting with home-made focaccia. The focaccia is made using Woolworths' Easy to Bake focaccia mix, and you can add your favourite flavours and toppings to make it your own.

4. Chuckles éclairs

Making éclairs may seem like a pro-level skill, but Motheba breaks it down so you can make them successfully. She is the pastry sous chef at the Cape Grace hotel, so she definitely knows what she's talking about! Instead of making basic éclairs (which we still love), she upped the ante by adding everyone's favourite chocolate treat – Chuckles!

3. Risotto al salto with baby marrow salad and green olive tapenade

Whether you've heard of risotto al salto or not, there's no denying it's a genius way to use leftover risotto. A crispy risotto pancake topped with a zesty fresh salad and home-made green olive tapenade is a fancy meal that's super-easy to make.

2. Tiramisu-inspired brown-butter chocolate brownies

We've seen a lot of tiramisu on social media, where people are mostly riffing off the classic Italian dessert to create new versions, such as citrus or berry. Motheba decided to go the other way. She took the classic flavours of tiramisu and used them to make epic brownies. If the tiramisu flavour and brown butter weren't enough to convince you to make these gooey brownies, the mascarpone mousse, whipped coffee, and peanut Chuckles topping certainly will!

1. Pistachio-and-vanilla tres leches cupcakes

Fatima Saib outdid herself with the recipe. Not only did she make a cupcake version of the super-popular tres leches cake, she added ice cream into the mix to make a unique topping that hits all the tres leches notes. Plus, the addition of pistachios just makes this recipe better.
