Zaynab Paruk’s drop doughnuts are delicious and wonderfully easy to make. Add a drizzle of chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries for the perfect post-Iftar sweet treat to enjoy during Ramadan.

Ingredients

Method
  • 1 free-range egg 
  • 50 g sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk 
  • 1 t vanilla 
  • 1 T ghee or melted butter
  • ¼ cup milk  
  • 120 g flour 
  • 1 ½ cup baking powder 
  • vegetable oil, for deep-frying 
  • For the chocolate sauce: 

  • 200 g Woolworths 27 % cocoa milk chocolate drops 
  • ¼ cup milk  
  • For serving: 

  • 60 g Woolworths cinnamon sugar 
  • strawberries or raspberries, for serving  

Method

Ingredients

1 Whisk together the wet ingredients, then add the dry ingredients and incorporate to make a smooth batter.

2 Heat the oil in a saucepan. Using your fingertips or a spoon, drop spoonfuls of dough into the oil and fry until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper. Toss in the cinnamon sugar while still warm.

3 To make the chocolate sauce, heat the milk, then pour over the chocolate drops. Stir until melted and smooth. Serve the doughnuts with the sauce and berries.
