Ingredients

Method
  • 500 g self-raising flour
  • 1 t salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • one of the following:

  • 1 t dried mixed herbs
  • 150 g or grated cheese
  • or sugar and cinnamon, to taste

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Sift the flour and salt. Add the buttermilk and mix until you have a sticky dough. Add one of the extra options.

Line a medium-sized loaf tin or 23 cm cake tin with baking paper that you have either buttered or sprayed with cooking spray, then pour in the mixture.

Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, or until a skewer comes out clean.

Cook’s note: If you choose the cinnamon sugar option, make sure you sprinkle the top of the loaf liberally and cut two large crosses (or kisses) into the loaf for added sweetness.
