The 9 best snack combos for summer entertaining
The entertaining season has officially touched down, so we asked Khanya Mzongwana to round up 9 of her best-ever dip-and-chip combinations. Keep this list saved for the next time you head to the shops, because these snack combos are all brilliant combos that will please every sort of crowd.
Hate it or love it, the festive season is here, and with it comes the time – and inclination – to constantly be snacking. Of course, many of us don’t need the silly season to remind us to eat like food is going extinct. My personal best thing is a chilled glass of Chenin, a crunch and a dip when the weather is hot – and having hosted plenty of guests who seem to feel exactly the same way, here are my top nine snack combos for keeping everybody happy.
1. Fried poppadoms + Bombay ketchup
Bombay ketchup is a brand-spanking-new condiment that’s part of Woolies’ incredible range of Indian-inspired foods, and it’s really something special. It’s a take on a popular condiment used in Indian street food: it’s hot, it’s kinda sweet, and there are flavours of fenugreek and allspice subtly coming through. This stuff is absolutely delicious on anything you put it on. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with venturing away from your regular tomato sauce and trying something new. Swirl it into some mayonnaise to make a creamier dip.

Speaking of this range, the cumin poppadoms are my new favourite – and yes, they’re usually served with curries. Looking at them, they don’t give off that they could be one of the greatest snacks but they puff up beautifully when deep-fried, the crunch is earth-shattering, and they don’t get greasy as long as you pop them on a bit of kitchen towel after frying. Break them into shards and serve warm if you can. If you're looking for an on-theme beverage for this pairing, try this amazing tamarind and date cocktail made with Woolworths tamarind & date chutney, also from the Indian Range.

2. Salt-and-vinegar-flavoured trout skin crisps + trout terrine
Not many snack combos feel luxurious as well as delicious, but there's something so casually fancy about trout skin crisps – they're also incredibly sustainable in the way they’re sourced and are a no-waste product. Topping with a smear of trout terrine might seem like putting a hat on a hat, but it’s a salty-creamy combination your friends will love you for, guaranteed. Add a little bunch of white grapes and some thin Granny Smith apple slices for good measure (and extra posh points)
3. Prawn cocktail chips + tartare sauce
I don’t know anybody who doesn’t love a prawn cocktail chip. They’re a cult classic that’s stood the test of time, and the only thing that’s really changed over the years is the packaging. These crispy snacks are great by the massive handful, but I also love dipping them in some tart yet creamy tartare sauce. Give it a try and get hooked on this clever combination.

4. BBQ-flavoured quinoa crisps + caramelised onion hummus
These are my absolute favourite chips at Woolworths – I don’t leave the store without a bag of them. They’re kinda sweet, kinda smoky, they’re so crunchy and they’re a fun shape to boot. Plus, the fact that they’re made with quinoa makes me feel good about eating them as much as I do. And the ridges make them a great chip for dipping, too. This hummus is so tasty: it’s smooth and creamy, and they’ve spooned over caramelised onion – and a few extra chickpeas in case you weren’t sure what flavour it is. Lol. If you want to try your hand at making your own flavoured hummus, try Hannah Lewry's easy hummus two ways.
5. Salted giant pretzel knots + sauerkraut aïoli
Sauerkraut aïoli might sound weird, but it’s really tasty! I like to blend sauerkraut and swirl it into Woolies’ aïoli. And those massive pretzel chips make the perfect dippers. To make the sauerkraut aïoli, blend 2 heaped tablespoons of sauerkraut into a chunky purée. Combine with 120 g Woolworths aïoli, a handful of roughly chopped dill and serve right away. Throw some grilled pork chipolatas on the platter and watch your gathering turn into a party!

6. Nacho crisps + corn-and-coriander salsa
Made with jalapeños, piquante peppers and sweetcorn, a pile of this salsa on a nacho chip makes the perfect bite. I love dicing an avocado into the salsa to bulk it up and to add to the Tex-Mex theme. Shop both these delicious items here:

If you want an easy classic nacho recipe, you have to try Clem Pedro's air-fryer nachos.
7. Fruit chutney-flavoured vegetable crisps + South African feta-and-herb dip
Beetroot and feta are a classic pairing often served as a salad, which is why I love this combination so much. The sweet crisps, with their tart chutney flavour, pair magically with the creamy-salty-cheesy dip. My favourite chips in this bag are the sweet potato ones – I always eat them first! (Hot quick lunch tip: this combination on a soft roll is fast and absolutely delicious.)

8. Crispy baby marrows + spinach, avo and basil dip
I created this chip-dip combo a few years back and it has absolutely held up! The crispy baby marrows can be cut a lot thicker for easier dippability (I just coined a new word…) and the dip can be eaten with all kinds of things: roast chicken, nachos, burgers and so much more. It’s another classic that I go back to often.

9. Crème fraîche-and-jalapeño dip + salt-and-vinegar-flavoured rice crackers
This recipe by Kate Wilson hits all the snacking marks: it’s spicy and fragrant and creamy, and because of the swirl, you get a differently delicious bite every time. This dip is great with crudités or fish goujons, or if you’d like to keep it simple, serve it with crunchy salt-and-vinegar rice crackers.
