5 recipes that will change the way you braai
What better way to end the month than with a braai? Hannah Lewry rounds up five of her favourite braai go-to dishes, from salad to marrow bones on the braai.
When I smell a braai wafting over the neighbours’ walls it always makes me instantly happy and relaxed – kind of setting off the holiday or Sunday afternoon feeling. Here are a few of my favourites.
Salad on the braai
This is a salad with guts! It’s a great way to use up the last of the vegetables in your fridge and give them a new life with the smoky flavour from the braai it really lifts and enhances their natural texures and flavours.
Meat-free skewers
Mushrooms are fantastic on the braai, they have a real meaty flavour profile so you won’t miss your protein too much if you are feeling the end-of-month pinch! These are delicious with streaky bacon threaded through and torn chunks of ciablatta with fresh thyme. If you want to make them go further, maybe add a block of mozzarella here and there.
Flavour-max marrow bones
Another great way to get that meaty flavour punch in your braai without breaking the bank is to try out these marrow bones on the braai. They are fabulous with potatoes, good crusty bread or roast vegetables!
Simply the best chicken
Keeping things simple is key to making the most out of minimal ingredients. Lemons and chicken are a match made in heaven, so instead of spending your money on loads of ingredients, buy the best quality chicken you can find and enhance it with zingy lemon and pinch of sea salt. The same goes for thick-cut steak and butter with fresh herbs.
Sweet stokbrood
This homegrown favourites with a twist is the perfect way to end off your braai. Try studding them with what ever you have in the pantry such as dried apricots, almonds and glazed with honey and butter.
