Summer’s favourite fruit: 5 ways with watermelon

Watermelon conjures up fond memories of summer for many of us. Hannah Lewry shares five ways to make the most of it

Watermelon really is the fruit of summer, well for me any way! I love to blend it to make the best watermelon milkshake you’ve ever tasted, and I adore it in spicy fresh salads with a braai after a nice hot day on the beach. Here are my top 5 ways to eat it.

The ultimate summer salad

I remember shooting this with Abigail and a good few years ago but I can still taste this salad just by looking at the picture and I crave it every time. You have to pan-fry the halloumi just as you serve the salad for the the hot salty contrast with the cool sweet watermelon.

Quick-and-tasty cocktails

The thing about cocktails is they should be easy and taste good otherwise I don’t much see the point of making them at home. This cocktail looks beautiful and tastes good too!

Five-minute showstopping dessert

I haven’t really got much of sweet tooth but this dessert is so fresh and light and is a real crowd-pleaser. It also looks amazing when you bring it to the table – I love a dessert that works hard with out you having to do any of the work yourself.

P.S. Omit the tequila if you like and stack with vanilla ice cream if you prefer.

My favourite milkshake

I discovered my love for this shake in high school during long summer days on the beach in Plett. This was my favourite thing to make when I walked through the door, sand still between my toes and salt in my hair. It never disappoints. Blend 2 handfuls watermelon with 2–3 scoops of vanilla ice cream until thick and smooth and enjoy. Just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s not utterly delicious.

The best lunch for friends

This is a great dish to make with friend, as everyone can get stuck in. Someone can start on the home-made wraps and the boys can get onto the chicken. I like to braai this chicken in summer, especially when I have friends over and then everyone just builds their own wrap. The watermelon just takes an otherwise ordinary chicken wrap to a whole new level of yum!
