5 popular picks for Suhoor

By Jeanne Calitz, 3 March 2025

What’s your go-to dish for Suhoor during Ramadan? We asked, you answered – and the favourites ranged from protein-rich brekkies to some nice old-fashioned oats.

We’re in the midst of Ramadan, and one area of meal prep focus during this time falls on what to make for Suhoor – the pre-dawn meal before the day starts. We asked you on Instagram what your go-to meal for Suhoor was, and these were the top five dishes:

• The winner, by a mile, was oats. Rolled oats, soaked oats, baked oats – it’s clear that this old-school ingredient is as popular as ever.

• Eggs also came out tops, especially scrambled eggs and cheesy omelettes.

• Smoothies are clearly a go-to during Ramadan, with a particular liking for anything that included bananas and dates.

• Another favourite is avocado, particularly on toast.

• Finally, the people voted for a protein-forward brekkie as a solid option.

With these picks in mind, here are a few excellent Suhoor meals. None of them requires much hands-on cooking, and they are all, without exception, truly delicious.

1. Overnight oats for Suhoor

There’s nothing like a bowl of soaked oats (prepped the previous night) to tide you over in the morning. This version is particularly delicious and flavourful thanks to the use of dried aromatic spices like cardamom and cinnamon, dates for a touch of sweetness, and loads of fresh seasonal fruit that can just be sliced and added in the morning.

2. The ultimate fluffy omelette

When it comes to getting in a good breakfast, few things come close to the MVP that is the humble egg. Apart from the treat that is a well-made portion of scrambled eggs on toast, we also like the versatility (and speedy nature) that the omelette provides. This version is wonderfully fluffy, and you can play around with the veg you add – if asparagus is not your thing, try shaved baby marrow, wilted spinach or even some quick-fried red onion.

3. Almond-and-banana smoothie with seeds

Dates are a fixture during Ramadan, and this smoothie delivers the goods. Made with oats, raw almonds and bananas, and so quick to assemble, it’s the perfect option for Suhoor – although you’ll probably want to make it throughout the year.

4. Avocado, kale and tahini toast

Long live avo toast! (If only avocado season kept going all year, right?) If your usual go-to is smashed avo with salt and pepper on toast, try your hand at this quick version, which makes use of creamed avocado – a mixture of ripe avo, Dijon mustard, lemon juice and seasoning. Add kale and tahini to the toast before you top it with the avo cream, and this meal goes from standard to spectacular in minutes.

5. Spring green skillet-baked eggs

When protein is the name of the game for breakfast, we’re right back to eggs. But this is not your standard eggy bake: somewhere between an omelette and a green frittata, this dish brings extra protein to the table thanks to the addition of fresh cream and ricotta. A little bit of fiddling with all those green veg and into the oven it goes to bake, while you get ready for the day.
