Beyond hot honey: 4 other sweet-and-spicy (swicy) sauces to try
While we’ll always love hot honey, here are four other variations on the swicy trend we just can’t get enough of.
If hot honey has been your go-to, then you've come to the right place. We love a "swicy" sauce – a sweet-spicy combo elevates everything from braaied chicken to plain rice or a fried egg. While hot honey will always be our OG, it's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what's possible with sweet-and-spicy sauces. Here are four other variations on the swicy trend that we just can't get enough of.
1. Sour peach hot sauce
Some form of hot sauce is a must in your fridge if you like a bit of fire in your food. But add a can of peaches in syrup and we're talking a next-level fresh, sweet, spicy sauce that you'll want to have on everything. Khanya reckons it would make the perfect gift for the foodie in your life.
2. Ripe banana peel chutney
Don't toss those banana peels! Khanya gives them new life in a chutney that's perfect with plantain, rice and fried greens. The peels take a bit of prep – soak them for an hour, then simmer for five minutes before dicing them. Add a few other flavours, including fresh banana and green chillies, and you'll never look at bananas the same way again.

3. Green chutney
Hitesh Pinchal from Kapoochka in Cape Town gifted this one to us. It's a vibrant blend of fresh herbs, chillies, sugar, garlic and ginger that brings a zing to anything you serve it with. He loves it with aloo tikki or pani puri.

4. Pineapple rind hot sauce
From the Queen of No Waste comes another "use it, don't toss it" sauce. In this one, Khanya boils pineapple rind with sugar and water to make a sweet pineapple water that's blended with garlic, onion, tomatoes and, of course, bird's-eye chillies.
