Although comfort foods carry us across all seasons, they’re especially good during winter. Here are our picks of the most iconic comfort food recipes, perfect for curling up with on a chilly night.

Chicken-and-mushroom ragù pie

Pies will forever top the list of comforting recipes, and this chicken-and-mushroom version is one we keep coming back to during winter. Serve with a side of buttery mash and gravy.

Beef stew

You truly don’t get anything more comforting than a simple beef stew. Even the word “stew” conjures up feelings of woolly knits and a big pot slowly cooking on the stove. We suggest eating this on the couch under a pile of blankets.

Extra-creamy macaroni cheese with bacon

We don’t ever really need an excuse to eat mac ’n cheese, but we find it’s especially delicious on a chilly winter night. Omit the bacon if you like and use a mix of whatever cheeses you’ve got hanging out in the fridge.

Risotto alla Milanese

We had a tough time choosing which risotto recipe was the most comforting, which means you can’t go wrong with any of them. But there’s something particularly lush about risotto alla Milanese.

Balsamic pork sausages with cauli-mash

Looking for a way to jazz up bangers and mash? This balsamic-glazed update will do the trick. And while we love the cauliflower mash used here, we won’t judge you for serving regular mashed potatoes.

Split pea soup

It’s hard to choose one soup as the most comforting, but this slow-cooked pea soup makes a pretty good case.
