Fancy something a little different on your burger this spring? How about Woolies’ haloumi? This characteristically squeaky Greek-style cheese is available in plain and smoky varieties and makes a delicious alternative to a traditional burger patty, plus it’s perfect for vegetarians. It’s also available in mini bites, perfect for making sliders, or just as a snack. That’s not all: plain and oreganum-flavoured haloumi brings texture and fresh flavour to salads, simply pangrill until melting, squeeze over some lemon juice and imagine you’re in the Greek islands.
1. Slice oreganum-flavoured haloumi into strips and marinate in honey, lemon juice and zest and olive oil. Skewer, then braai or grill.
2. Pan-fry haloumi bites and serve with rocket, basil, charred stone fruit and avocado. Dress with basil, white balsamic dressing and nut-and-seed sprinkle.
3. Layer the smoked haloumi burger with crisp greens, charred baby marrow, roasted peppers and hummus. Serve with sweet potato chips.
