Eat Out reveals the 42 restaurants set to receive stars in 2022

Looking for the best restaurants in South Africa? This year, the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards are back with a new star rating system that recognises excellence across a broad range of restaurants. The awards night will see 42 shortlisted eateries receive either 1, 2 or 3 stars. Here are the restaurants that are in the running.

After a break due to the pandemic, the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards are back in 2022 and better than ever. Our very own food director Abigail Donnelly is the chief judge. She along with five carefully chosen expert judges have sifted through the best eateries in the country to create a shortlist of 42. Each will receive between 1 and 3 stars at the awards on 20 November at the Grand West Arena in Cape Town.

How the restaurants were selected for the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards

The shift to a star rating system enables the awards to celebrate a broader range of restaurants than ever before. The expert judges working with Abi include, Mokgadi Itsweng, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, Karen Dudley, Moses Magwaza, and Anna Trapido. The panel have spent the last 5 months eating out at a wide variety of restaurants in the country, and used a specially developed online judging tool, which allowed them to score eateries on décor, ambience, service, the wine list, ingredients and of course, the quality of the food.

In line with the Awards’ commitment to a fair judging process, every meal was paid for by Eat Out, with no mention made that this was part of the Awards assessment.
