“I would like to thank the TASTE and Eat Out teams for this amazing opportunity. I am very thankful and humbled by what you have done. I’d also would like to thank my mother who sometimes understands why I’ve always wanted to be a chef and sometimes doesn’t. I think she definitely understands now. I look forward to next year like you cannot imagine.” – Ayanda Matomela on winning the The TASTE Eat Out Bursary for 2017.
The 21 year-old Ayanda Matomela, from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth, is 2017’s bursary winner. Since he graduated high school Ayanda has been interning at Green Leaf Cafe as a chef. In 2017 Ayanda will start his professional culinary training at Silwood Cookery School in, Cape Town, Western Cape.

TASTE food editor and Eat Out editor-in-chief, Abigail Donnelly, presented the bursary to Ayanda on Sunday at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. “The Woolworths TASTE Eat Out Bursary educates, innovates and motivates someone who shows the passion to want to become a chef but does not have the means to do so. Ayanda has the drive and keenness to follow his dreams of being a qualified chef,” says Abi.
