2017 Woolworths TASTE Eat Out Bursary Winner: Ayanda Matomela

The Woolworths TASTE & Eat Out Culinary Bursary is awarded to a student to train as a professional chef for one year. This bursary was presented at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards on Sunday. The recipient will start their training in 2017.

I'd also would like to thank my mother who sometimes understands why I've always wanted to be a chef and sometimes doesn't. I think she definitely understands now. I look forward to next year like you cannot imagine." - Ayanda Matomela on winning the The TASTE Eat Out Bursary for 2017.

The 21 year-old Ayanda Matomela, from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth, is 2017’s bursary winner. Since he graduated high school Ayanda has been interning at Green Leaf Cafe as a chef. In 2017 Ayanda will start his professional culinary training at Silwood Cookery School in, Cape Town, Western Cape.

Ayanda finds inspiration from local chefs like Siba Mtongwana, Khanya Mzongwana and internationally Luke Thomas.

TASTE food editor and Eat Out editor-in-chief, Abigail Donnelly, presented the bursary to Ayanda on Sunday at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. “The Woolworths TASTE Eat Out Bursary educates, innovates and motivates someone who shows the passion to want to become a chef but does not have the means to do so. Ayanda has the drive and keenness to follow his dreams of being a qualified chef,” says Abi.
