The 10 most viewed TASTE recipes of 2024

By TASTE, 3 January 2025

What was your favourite TASTE recipe of 2024? We’ve taken a look at the stats and it’s clear that you were into interesting sweet treats and quick-and-easy dinners. From pastry chef-approved brownies to a simple but sensational pasta dish, here are the most popular recipes of last year.

2024 was an interesting year. There were many elections around the world, including our very own here in South Africa. Loadshedding miraculously stopped (touch wood that continues) and TASTE stopped printing bi-monthly issues to embrace a digital-first model. This allowed us to work with more incredible creators in the food space and expand our database of recipes for you. So which recipes from this expanded offering interested you the most?

10. Pumpkin fritters

If there is one thing we know to be true about the most viewed TASTE recipes, it's that there will always be a South African recipe in the mix. So seeing Sam Woulidge's pampoenkoekies, a.k.a. pumpkin fritters, on this list is no surprise. Not only are these nostalgic, they are super easy to make. Enjoy them as Sam's family does, piping hot while standing around the kitchen table.

9. The fluffiest flapjacks

Speaking of easy and nostalgic, Hannah Lewry's fluffiest flapjacks recipe is always a hit when we post it. Maybe it's because they really are fluffier than your average flapjacks? Perhaps it's the five-star reviews? Whatever the reason is, you loved this recipe enough to place it in the top 10 of 2024.

8. Herman Lensing’s mom’s carrot cake

Another sure-fire success for TASTE is a family recipe. Herman Lensing shared his mom's foolproof carrot cake, and it received a lot of love on social media. Herman made things even easier by making this a sheet cake – but of course you can make it as a loaf, a round cake or cupcakes if you prefer.

7. Risotto al salto with baby marrow salad and green olive tapenade

Abigail Donnelly schooled us on this classic Italian dish, and we are so grateful. This crispy risotto pancake is the perfect way to use up leftover risotto, plus you just need 4 ingredients to make it. Abi added a baby marrow salad and green olive tapenade to make a meal out of this, but you can enjoy it as is too.

6. “Gogo’s Special” pineapple fridge tart

In 2018, Yvonne Chaka Chaka shared her family recipe for pineapple fridge tart with us. It was part of a feature titled "What do you love to cook for your sons?".  In 2024, we recreated the recipe and it blew up. People were instantly transported to their childhood and shared their memories and versions of this classic dessert. It was a such a moment!

5. Tiramisu-inspired brown butter chocolate brownies

One of the new contributors we got to work with last year was Motheba Makhetha. She is a pastry sous chef at the Cape Grace Hotel and the 2023 Eat Out Cacao Barry Dessert Award winner. She brought a lot of sweetness to our site with her dessert recipes. This gooey, coffee-spiked brownie topped with mascarpone mousse and whipped coffee definitely took the cake!

4. Salmon-and-sundried tomato spaghetti

It's not often that a spaghetti recipe makes it on these lists, let alone breaks the top five. But this recipe by Abi hits all the right notes. It could not be easier to make, comes together in just 20 minutes and works equally well as a meal for a special occasion or a weeknight dinner.

3. Deep-fried egg with rice

A fried egg making it into the top three of the most viewed TASTE recipes list was not on our bingo card! But we reckon Wayne Chang a.k.a. Munchin Mash plays a big part in its popularity. Plus, he shows you how to deep-fry an egg perfectly, resulting in the most simple but delicious-looking meal that's ready in under 10 minutes.

@wwtaste Fried eggs, but make them faster and more delicious? Sign us up! We enlisted the help of @Wayne Chang to show us how he makes his favourite midnight snack: crispy fried eggs and rice. All you need is eggs, rice and a few punchy garnishes and you’ve got yourself an addictive little meal.  Ingredients canola oil, for frying 1 extra-large free-range egg 150 g cooked rice, for serving chilli oil, for serving soya sauce, for serving spring onions, sliced, to garnish Method 1. Heat the oil in a wok and crack the egg into the middle. Cook for 1–2 minutes, or to your preference. Use a slotted spoon to splash the hot oil over the egg to speed up the process. 2. Serve with the rice, chilli oil and soya sauce, garnished with spring onion. #foodtiktok #recipesoftiktok #heritageday #heritage ♬ Ashes - Official Sound Studio

2. Gourmet falafel rolls

We've always shared vegetarian recipes on taste, but this has to be the most successful one. Zandile Finxa decided to use falafels as a vegetarian alternative for iconic boerie rolls, and people were here for it! Her falafel recipe is foolproof, and her topping suggestions are next level.

1. Pistachio-and-vanilla tres leches cupcakes

There is clearly a sweet bias to this list – so of course the top recipe of the year was always going to be a dessert. We feel like tres leches cake made a big comeback in 2024, and Fatima Saib decided to take the popular treat and customise it in the best way possible. She made tres leches cupcakes, which are easier to share, and used ice cream as one of the milks. Plus, she added another trending ingredient for 2024: pistachios. Winning all round...
