The most popular recipes in June

1 June heralded the start of lockdown level 3 in South Africa, which meant restaurant deliveries started opening up, taking a little pressure off home cooks. On Google, recipe searches started falling again, after hitting a lifetime high on 5 April, but they’re still higher than the normal baseline for this time of year. For the most part, we’re all still cooking more than normal. As for the kind of recipes we’re reaching for, they’re largely comfort food.

1. Siba’s oxtail stew with dombolo

Siba’s oxtail stew came out tops in June. It contains two magic words for South Africans: oxtail and dombolo – both big search terms on their own. We also shared this on Instagram in June, which might be partly why it’s top of the pile.

2. Clement Pedro’s banana loaf

We’re pleased to say your devotion to banana loaf has not waned, and we’re not surprised. This particular recipe is a seriously good one. Sprinkle some extra brown sugar for a bit of crunch, if you want to change it up a bit!

3. Jan Hendrik’s ultimate Peppermint Crisp tart

Jan Hendrik put lockdown to good use by making a handy video of this frankly insane recipe of his. It’s topped with chocolate milk shards, as if layers of chocolate cake and creamy Peppermint Crisp pudding weren’t enough.

This chocolate malva-style pud is getting some love over on the TASTE Recipe Club on Facebook, where reader Yolandi Labuschagne served it with Woolies triple-caramel ice cream. Inspired!
