Sunny days, special occasions and a craving for comfort – October gave us plenty of opportunities to cook great food. We’ve rounded up the top 10 recipes you loved this month. Spoiler alert: expect indulgence!

10. Classic Victoria cake

We love a classic recipe, and clearly you do, too. We posted this on Instagram and Facebook, and you flocked to the recipe. Khanya Mzongwana shared this recipe and describes it as elegant in its simplicity. She loves it with milky rooibos, but you can have it with your favourite pairing.

9. Grana Padano-and-rosemary biscuits

We know you love grating a pile of Grana Padano cheese on your pasta (we do too), but sometimes you want something different. Marcelle van Rooyen's Grana Padano-and-rosemary biscuits are the impressive snacks you've been waiting for. They're super-easy to make and perfect for a charcuterie board.

8. Aloo tikki firecrackers

This October, we asked Hitesh Panchal, owner and chef of Kapoochka: Contemporary Indian Street Food, to share recipes for Diwali. Not only did he deliver on flavour, but he also brought the nostalgia by showing his son Hriday how he used to make "firecrackers" using the aloo tikki. Plus, you don't have to wait for Diwali to make them. According to Hitesh, they're the perfect snack for any occasion, including watching rugby.

7. Broccoli-and-cheese toastie

The veggies are not hidden in this toastie, but they look so good it doesn't even matter! Khanya is a firm believer that if you want to get someone to try an ingredient they're unsure of (like little ones with broccoli), stick it in a grilled cheese sarmie! Whether you're a broccoli fan or not, this recipe clearly piqued your interest.

6. Brinjal lasagne

Need an indulgent vegetarian main for your next dinner party? The TASTE audience recommends this brinjal lasagne by Jacqueline Burgess. It looks like high effort, but most of the work is done in the oven. You don't have to layer it either. Simply break the lasagne sheets into the brinjal-and-tomato sauce and top with Parmesan.

5. Cherry-and-ginger BBQ spareribs with grilled nectarine salad

If you're going to make ribs from scratch, you want them to be extra special. Strone and Ashleigh Henry of Side Wing went all out with this recipe. No wonder the video of Strone making them got 1 million views on Instagram!  The ribs are cooked in ginger beer and the marinade features cherries. And to make them even more fancy, they serve the ribs with a grilled nectarine salad. Judging by the comments, many of you are excited to try them.

Colourful, bursting with flavour and good for the gut, Khanya's roast chicken salad is guaranteed to boost your mood. Rather than your average dressing, Khanya made a kombucha vinaigrette so you can get some probiotics into your meal.

3. Zaynab Paruk’s chicken biryani

Everyone has their own way of making biryani and Zaynab Paruk was kind enough to share hers with us. Not only did she share her family recipe, she made a wonderful tutorial video and shared some amazing hacks, including one involving a wooden spoon to hear the food simmering! The big question is whether to add eggs or not.

2. Green chutney

When Hitesh Panchal shot his Diwali videos, he made an incredible green chutney that he served with the aloo tiki (featured earlier on this list) and his chaat board. It was so good, the crew could not stop eating it. We couldn't gatekeep, so we shared it as a bonus recipe and you all flocked to it. We recommend having it with anything dippable, but be warned, it's addictive.

1. Bee sting cake

Did you grow up with bee sting cake? Zaynab did. And when she shared her take on this cake, she triggered nostalgia and cravings from our audience. To quote one of the commenters: "That is my best cake from my childhood – definitely going to give that a try. Looks delicious." It is delicious, and deserves its spot as the most-viewed recipe for October!
