5 great fakeaways you can make at home

By Jess Spiro, 1 April 2020

Missing your Friday night takeaway treat? We feel you. These ‘fakeaway’ recipes will satisfy that craving in no time.

Double beef burger with smoked cheddar and sriracha mayo

Something about Friday night screams 'burgers', and this one will rival any burger you can get at your local pub. Make your own patties with mince if that's all you have on hand, but don't miss out on the spicy sauce collection (all made using things you likely already have in the back of the fridge). Serve with a side of oven fries and you're all good to go.

Crispy tempura hake with twice-fried home-made chips

Fish and chips are the ultimate takeaway treat. This version makes use of frozen fish, meaning you'll have it on the table in less time that it would have taken to wait for delivery anyway. If you have frozen peas, they're not optional.

Fast, easy fish tacos

If you have the tempura hake portions, you're winning, but these tacos work just as well with simple roasted fish. Dust it in a mix of chilli powder and cumin, sear off in a hot pan and carry on as usual.

Orange-sesame duck and butternut noodles

Use chicken or pork in place of duck, and any noodles you have around – the real MVP here is the sauce made up mostly from pantry items. Throw in any hardy greens you're trying to use up such as broccoli, kale, spinach or cabbage too. You might never go back to ordering in.

Two-ingredient pizza bases

Using two ingredients you've likely got to hand, you'll be able to make the pizza of your dreams. Top with the suggested tomato sauce and cheese, or go rogue and add pesto, roasted veggies and an array of whatever cheese you have lying about. This is also a great one to do with the kids – let them choose their own toppings and build their pizzas themselves.
