Neo’s Isibindi nomhlehlo recipe

Isibindi nomhlehlo is one of the first dishes made during a traditional Xhosa slaughter. Simple, smoky and served with salt and fresh chilli, it’s a dish rooted in heritage, family and gathering around the fire. Get this recipe and more from Neo's new cookbook, Love and Lobola. ❤️

    Granadilla Tres Leches cake

    40 minutes SERVES 10

One of my all-time favourite desserts, so beloved in my circle, is tres leches cake. It has even become the name of our friend circle’s WhatsApp group! The Latin American cake, which translates to “three milks” is a delicious sponge cake soaked in a milk mixture made of evaporated milk, condensed milk and double thick cream. This is one of those blank canvas cakes where you can infuse all sorts of flavours via the milk mixture – here I opted to lift the flavour with a fun and punchy infusion of granadilla.

The Zaza Sandwich (with swanky sauce)

    45 minutes SERVES 2

I have a sandwich called The Zaza and it’s my partner Zaza’s favourite combination of things between bread. We’re long distance so I once got my chef friend – shoutout Mpho Deane – to make it for her and stick a candle in it when we first started dating. It’s one of the first things Zaza and I ever ate together, on the floor of her apartment, while we exchanged shy smiling glances at one another. That’s my romantic food story, I guess. If this doesn’t strike a universal chord it’s okay, it’s a personal account of what makes food romantic, and how the romance is not necessarily in the food, it’s who you share it with.

    Mini cottage cheese-and-egg muffins

    30 minutes SERVES 12

A quick, easy, protein-packed treat that’s perfect as a lunchbox staple for kids. These mini cottage cheese-and-egg muffins are incredibly versatile; they’re soft, flavourful, and packed with nutrients to keep everyone energised throughout the day. They’re also perfect as a grab-and-go breakfast snack for busy mornings. Cottage cheese adds creaminess and a boost of protein, while the eggs make them light and fluffy. Plus, you can customise them to suit your taste. Add shredded veggies such as spinach or carrots, toss in some diced ham, bacon, or sprinkle with cheese for extra flavour. They’re also great for making in batches and freezing for up to three months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and pop into the oven or air-fryer in the morning for a few minutes.
